Culture

Menorca has more than a thousand priceless prehistoric sites, due, mainly, to the fabulous Talayotic Culture that dominated the island during the Iron Age. For all that surrounds this ancient culture, UNESCO has decided to admit it as a candidate for World Heritage.

Their greatest monuments are talaiotsnavetestaules and necropolis.

Ornithology: Binicreixent sits in one of the Island’s leading ornithology spots. You can watch kestrels, hawks, and eagles while eating breakfast at the house or visit the flooded fields bellow the house and see the plethora of bird life it attracts. There are other well-known bird sanctuaries on the Island too.

Horse Riding: Available locally.

Fiestas

After the dead calm in winter, the island bursts out when good weather arrives.
Between June and September each village and town have their folk festivals where horses and «pomada» -Menorca’s typical drink- are the stars.

The fiesta season start In Ciutadella with San Juan on June 24th. They are the most popular of the Island’s fiestas, thousands gather in their tiny alleys, for two days the «caixers», horseriders, ride the streets in a parade named “Jaleo”. With help from the public the horses stand on their back feet for as long as possible. A must see spectacle, this fiesta kickstarts the fiestas on the island and virtually every weekend there’s a Jaleo in some town or Village on the Island until September.

Most of the evening Jaleos take place on the closest Saturday night to the town’s Patron Saints Day – one should double check.
